THE ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION: ‘Membership Promise: Is the EU ready to grant Georgia the status of a potential candidate?’

On Tuesday, 13th February 2018, The Levan Mikeladze Foundation organized a round table discussion on assessing the context regarding the challenges and opportunities for Georgia to receive an EU membership promise. The event was held at Information Center on NATO and EU. The main discussion question has been: What is the balance sheet of contributing and unfavorable trends and processes that could affect Georgia’s prospects for obtaining membership promise? The round table discussion has provided a forum for different actors i.e. Georgian Government, civil society organizations, diplomatic corps and international organizations. This was the first discussion in a series of similar events within the project Towards Unlocking Georgia’s EU Perspective with funding from the International Visegrad Fund, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung – Georgia and Open Society – Georgia Foundation. Following discussions will focus on readiness of Georgia to claim the status of a potential candidate, as well as reviewing the experience of the Visegrad countries and selected Western Balkan states in obtaining the promise of membership.
